CASE REPORT TwoFamilial Mesothelioma Cases with High Concentrations of Soluble Cytokeratin 19 Fragment in Pleural Fluid
نویسندگان
چکیده
Wereport two cases of diffuse malignant pleural mesothelioma occurring almost simultaneously in one family. Patient 1 was a 42-year-old Japanese man who had worked as an electrical engineer for 25 years. Patient 2, his mother, was 69 years old. She lived for 10 years with patient 1 after he started his work, and also worked at a shipyard herself for 6 years. The concentrations of cytokeratin subunit 19 fragment (CYFRA21-1) in pleural fluid of the two patients were 1,500 ng/ml, and 1,200 ng/ml, respectively. Measurement of CYFRA21-1 concentration in the pleural fluid maybe a useful tool for a diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma. (Internal Medicine 37: 407-410, 1998)

Cytokeratin 19 fragment/carcinoembryonic antigen ratio in pleural effusion is a useful marker for detecting malignant pleural mesothelioma.
BACKGROUND The clinical utility of tumour markers in pleural effusion is still controversial with regard to the efficient detection of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). PATIENTS AND METHODS The levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cytokeratin 19 fragment (CYFRA 21-1) were retrospectively studied in pleural effusion of unknown origin in patients who had undergone medical thoracosco...
متن کاملRecurrent hydropneumothorax: An unusual presentation for malignant pleural mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare pulmonary malignancy commonly associated with asbestos exposure. Its presentation is insidious and non-specific, with complaints of chest pain, dyspnea and cough. Chest X-ray may demonstrate unilateral pleural effusion. CT and PET scans may highlight nodular pleural plaques. Diagnosis often times is difficult with negative imaging and negative pleural fluid studies. In ra...
متن کاملImmunohistochemical differences between hyaluronan- and non-hyaluronan-producing malignant mesothelioma.
In many but not all cases, malignant mesothelioma is associated with an elevated content of hyaluronan in pleural fluid. The hyaluronan-producing mesothelioma has not yet been immunohistochemically characterized; therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the immunohistochemical reactivity patterns in relation to the ability of this tumour to produce hyaluronan. Pleural fluid samples f...
متن کاملHigh pleural fluid hyaluronan concentrations in rheumatoid arthritis.
Previous studies have shown that high pleural fluid (Pf) hyaluronan (HYA) concentrations may be due not only to malignant mesothelioma but also to inflammatory diseases. The objective of this study was to evaluate Pf-HYA in various nonmalignant inflammatory pleural disorders. A radiometric assay was used to determine HYA in Pf and serum (S) of 126 patients, 12 of whom had rheumatoid arthritis (...
متن کاملDiagnostic value of tumour markers in pleural effusions
Introduction We investigated whether tumour markers carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), cancer antigen 125 (CA-125), and cytokeratin 19 fragment (CYFRA 21-1) in pleural effusions and serum can be used to distinguish pleural effusion aetiology. Materials and methods During the first thoracentesis, we measured pleural fluid and serum tumour marker concentrations and c...
